Veterans Day started as a day to reflect upon the heroism of those who died in our service. It fell on November 11th because that is the anniversary of the signing of the Armistice that ended World War 1.

In 1954 this holiday changed from “Armistice Day” to “Veterans Day” in order to account for all veterans in all wars. The original concept for the celebration was for a day observed with parades and public meetings and a brief suspension of business.

Veterans Day is a time for us to pay our respects to those who have served. For one glorious day, you are joined by everyone else around the nation who doesn't spend every waking moment breathing this military stuff like you do. For one day, we stand united in respect for our veterans that fight for our country.

Britain, France, Australia and Canada also commemorate the veterans of World Wars I and II on or near November 11th. Canada has Remembrance Day, and Britain has Remembrance Sunday on the second Sunday of November.

In the United States, an official wreath-laying ceremony is held each Veterans Day at the Tomb of the Unknowns at Arlington National Cemetery, while other celebrations are held in different states around the country.

Memorial Day is often confused with Veterans Day, Memorial Day is to honor the veterans that have passed away in service to their country or that been injured, while Veterans Day gives honor to all veterans living or dead.
